I was following along during the 8-bit vs. 16-bit segment. I've always been told that moving an 8-bit original into 16-bit for editing was useless. You are right, the histogram does look much better after moving the 16-bit back to 8. Still curious, I shift-dragged the "16-bit" version over to my 8-bit original. I set this new layer to Difference mode, then merged the result to a new layer. Finally, I opened up Levels to get an idea of just how much a difference there is. I've got to say, the difference is so minimal that I'm left wondering — is any real-world use to this technique?

I have just discovered your podcast - very interesting -- keep it up -- even the historical stuff.
I worked through your example demonstrating the value of 16-bit files. The smoothing of the histogram in the conversion from 16-bit to 8-bit appears to be dependent on the "Use Dither" checkbox in Color Settings. If "Use Dither" is off, then the histogram remains jagged. I suspect that the dithering used in printing would provide the same smoothing effect. I do shoot everything in RAW -- but I edit in 8 bits after major tonal corrections because it is much faster.

In response to your comment about image forgery, I think the author was talking about the forensic use of photos and videos, rather than the entertainment use. Yes, many movie effects are believable enough in the context of a feature film, but would not hold up to close scrutiny, and often leaving the view with the feeling of fakeness upon viewing a second time.
