At the PhotoPlus Expo today, I received an extensive demo of Aperture from Joseph Schorr, the Senior Product Marketing Manager for Aperture. I'll be devoting the next episode of the show to discussing what I learned, but suffice it to say that while it's a very interesting application, there are more than a few significant omissions from the product as it stands today. As far as speed of manipulating RAW files, it's definitely a great performer (of course, I saw it running on a quad core Mac with a boatload of RAM, a machine on which Photoshop also screams), and it's a great way to sort and manage large numbers of RAW files (or any other significant image format, for that matter, including Photoshop files). The Light Box is awesome, and is a great way to look at and play with images. That's the good news. The bad news is that I found the color correction tools to be less than thrilling, and I'll sum it up like this: no Curves control, no densitometer (Info palette), no channel-by-channel capabilities, no masking, no layers, no CMYK output. Yes, the approach of keeping operations separate from the source data files makes tons of sense (as it does in Adobe After Effects), and is a big part of the reason for the speedy performance. I hope this puts some fire under Adobe to consider moving Photoshop towards a similar technology. For professional photographers looking to manage large numbers of Raw files, Aperture will be a useful tool, but for everyone else, the $499 price tag is a bit prohibitive, in my opinion. Listen to the next episode of Attention Photoshoppers! for my in-depth analysis.

Apart from the price tag, I thought the system requirements were a bit much. I can see how a G5 would be necessary with a high end graphics card, but my point is Apple seems to have developed an app which leaves behind anyone with a machine more than 2 years old. My G4 is not quite 3 years old, and it just won't cut it.
Having said that, I was wondering if Apple might either reduce the system requirements before shipping or beef up iPhoto to accept DNG files. They have the consumers and the pros covered, but they have forgotten the serious amateur. I'm not a pro, but I would like to work like one.

    Keith,

I would generally agree that the system requirements for Apeture are steep, let's remember that Apple is also in the hardware business, and promotes the purchase of new machines quite intensely. There's no way that they'll reduce the system requirements, and given that limitations of the product, I also agree that the price tag is high. Listen to episode 6 to hear details on what I've learned about Aperture.

The podcast was fairly straightforward and was useful if you haven't read anything else on the web or seen Apple's web site. But there was nothing really revelatory here.

I do have one question though. You harp considerably on the fact that Aperture doesn't have CMYK output. But do photographers typically deal with CMYK? I mean, if you're being published in a book or magazine, doesn't the publisher deal with those issues? Don't all publishers have Photoshop? Maybe it's a control freak thing? Just curious.

LM - I just finished listening to the Aperture show, and I have to say, it was the first place that I heard ANY mention of the lack of a densitometer, the limitations of the sharpening and noise reduction filters, the lack of interchannel math and the ability to limit effects to specific channels, ALL important in my photography work. As far as the issue of CMYK, this is a huge deal for me, as I need to have some idea of how things will print once they hit a printing press. Control freak thing? When someone is paying you thousands of dollars for your image, you need to be able to tell them what issues might come up on press. The lack of CMYK output is a serious one, and if you don't think so, I'd have to guess you don't do professional photography. David, this episode rocked! You are THE MAN!

My understanding is Aperture can output to any color space you have an ICC profile for. So it can “output? CMYK.

I must admit I'm still not a fan – from an artistic point of view – of RAW. The idea is that you can take any rubbish photo and touch it up to make it look awesome – but, in truth, the idea of taking a GOOD photo is to take a GOOD photo, not just take any photo. You don't get to capture the moment when all you're doing is touching it up.

I know maybe I'm just being a bit of a purist, but in truth most RAW applications are useless anyway. Besides, I still do want to take a good PHOTO and not just be good at touching up a photo. The actual pic itself, through a good camera, is what I am after and what I enjoy. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, and am happy with the idea of RAW support in one sense, but in another I hope it doesn't destroy the art of photography.
